• If a storm warning is issued take shelter, stay away from windows and if you live in a mobile home, get out (high winds may cause it to tip).
  • Don’t go outside during a hurricane, but if you have to due to flooding, seek high ground.
  • Stay inside during thunderstorms and blizzards. The power lines could go down, which can be lethal.
  • Stay off the landline phone and computer during any storm.
  • Avoid taking a shower or bath.
  • Use flashlights first; if you use up all of the batteries then use candles but be careful.
  • Don’t open the fridge or freezer unless you absolutely have to; if the power goes out you want your food to stay cold as long as possible.
  • If the power goes out notify your power company immediately.
  • Don’t use gas appliances to stay warm.
  • Unplug as many appliances as possible.
  • Make sure portable generators or heaters are in low traffic areas in the house; they are dangerous for kids and should be out of the way.
  • Eat regularly so that your energy levels stay the same.
  • If you are in a car, park, leave the engine on, get below the windows, and cover your head with a blanket.
